Importance of Spaying and Neutering Your Pet

The Importance of Spaying and Neutering Your Pet

As a pet owner, you want to provide your dog or cat with preventative tools to keep it in the best of health. Spaying and neutering your pet is an important part of being a great pet owner. If your pet is ready for alteration, contact Twin Peaks Veterinary Center in Tucson to make an appointment with our veterinarian. Read on to learn why it is important to spay or neuter your pet, steps to take before your pet’s surgery, and how to care for your pet after the procedure.

Why the Spay & Neuter Procedure Is Important

If you do not plan to breed your dog or cat, spay & neuter surgery is necessary to stop your pet from being able to reproduce. In addition to eliminating the risk of unwanted puppies or kittens, your pet will be less likely to suffer from some reproductive cancers. They may also stop poor behavioral practices after they are “fixed”.

Steps to Take Before Your Pet’s Spay & Neuter Surgery

You will need to bring your cat or dog to our veterinarian before they can be surgically altered. Your pet will receive a complete examination to ensure it is healthy enough for the surgery. If your pet is healthy enough for the procedure, our veterinarian will recommend a time to stop giving your cat or dog food and water the night before the surgery.

Help Your Pet After the Surgery Is Performed

After your pet’s surgery, keep it in a comfortable location away from a lot of activity in the home. This way it can rest and recuperate. If you notice any bleeding or discharge around the area of your pet’s incision, contact our office to make an appointment for an evaluation.
