Flea & Tick Prevention: Keeping Your Pets Safe from Fleas & Ticks

Helping to Keep Your Pets Safe from Fleas and Ticks

Here in Tucson, Arizona, our pets can have fleas and ticks year-round. That’s why you need to bring your dogs and cats to us at Twin Peaks Veterinary Center to talk with a veterinarian about parasite prevention.

Why Worry About Flea and Ticks?

Fleas and ticks aren’t just pesky critters that annoy your pets. They carry dangerous diseases that both you and your pets can get. Fleas can carry diseases like bubonic plague, cat scratch fever, and typhus, and ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and tularemia. These illnesses can make you, your family, and your pets extremely sick.

Parasite Prevention and Your Pet

Because the risks to you and your pets are so great, it’s crucial to keep your pets on a parasite preventative that will kill both fleas and ticks. While there are over-the-counter solutions for external pests, it is best to consult with one of our veterinarians about parasite prevention. Not all preventatives are safe for your pets. Cats, especially, are sensitive to certain ingredients in some flea and tick control products. Your cats can become ill if you use the wrong products, and some dog flea and tick products are not as effective as those that are available to our veterinarians.

Get Effective Flea and Tick Control from Our Veterinarians

At Twin Peaks Veterinary Center, our veterinarians have the best parasite preventative medicine for pets. Most of these preventatives are prescription-only, so you can’t purchase them online or in a store without a prescription from a veterinarian. Whether you choose a topical or a pill for your pet, flea and tick preventatives usually last a month per dosage.
